Guest speaker, Cynthia Schiebel will be discussing the latest scientific research on how the use and abuse of alcohol by adolescents can have adverse effects on their brain development. Schiebel is a licensed professional counselor with a private practice in Austin, Texas. She has spent 28 years in the field of education, including 14 years coordinating Title IV, Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities programs. Her training audiences include school districts, community organizations, youth, parents and private companies throughout the United States. Texas Forestry Museum’s 2010 Reading Railroad March 17, 2010
Lufkin, Texas - Once again Reading Railroad is coming to the Texas Forestry Museum. Children fifth grade and younger are invited to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Texas Forestry Museum as we celebrate our 14 th annual Reading Railroad . Come out and take part in this great event on March 17, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Participants can stay for as much of the event as they would like. Children will be entertained with stories read by local community leaders as they venture through indoor and outdoor exhibits that the museum hosts. Reading stations last approximately fifteen minutes each, and new readers will be brought in every hour. This year’s readers include: John Garbutt from the Texas State Railroad, Rachel Emrick, Lufkin’s City Arborist, Rick Schiller from Angelina Arts Alliance, Christie Maddux from Lufkin Mall, Tara Watson-Watkins from Lufkin Visitor and Convention Bureau, Amanda Anderson from Angelina Beautiful/Clean, Reverend Bettie Kennedy, and many more!
Guests will have an opportunity to explore the Urban Wildscape Trail located on the museum’s grounds. There will also be craft activities, and snacks for visitors to enjoy compliments of our generous event sponsor, your neighborhood Brookshire Brothers. The museum’s depot will be open and guests are invited to climb aboard our 1908 Baldwin Locomotive and our big red caboose.
The Texas Forestry Museum is proud to hold this event in an effort to encourage people of all ages to embrace the gift of reading. Angelina College’s Health Careers Division will hold a pair ofinformation sessions for the Vocational Nursing Program’s proposed expansionexpected to start in the fall semester at the new center in Livingston.
The sessions will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 22and Monday, March 29th at the Livingston Junior High School’s Black BoxTheater. The junior high school is located at 1801 Highway 59 North inLivingston.
The proposed Nursing Program will be a one-year certificationprogram. To obtain the necessary information and application, attendance atan information session is required.

Angelina College to Host Annual Transfer College Fair March 24, 2010
Posted by: AC News Service Angelina College will host its annual Transfer College Fair from 10a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24th in the AC Student Center cafeteria.
Organized to assist those community college students interested intransferring to four-year institutions, the Transfer College Fair is anevent that brings together regional colleges and universities to presentinformation relevant to the transfer process.
The recruiters and admissions representatives will provideinformation on transfer guidelines, deadlines, various majors, catalogs,applications and other materials necessary for a transfer.
Participating colleges and universities include Texas A&MUniversity, Baylor University, Sam Houston State University, the Universityof Texas-Tyler, Stephen F. Austin University, the University of North Texas,East Texas Baptist University and others.

AC Spring Concert Angelina College’s Swinging Roadrunner Jazz Combo performsduring the Fall 2009 concert March 25, 2010
Posted by: AC News Service Promising to eclipse the sounds and excitement of a spectacular fallconcert, Angelina College’s Swinging Roadrunner Jazz Band and the ACC BigBand will again rock the rafters of AC’s Hudgins Hall with a concertscheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 25th.
Director Larry Greer leads the program, with his musicians offeringselections from contemporary music and jazz standards, as well as big bandstandards immortalized by legendary performers.
This year’s featured guest will be trombonist Walt Boenig fromLas Vegas. His career as a professional trombonist included such road bandsas Glenn Miller Orchestra (under four leaders, Buddy DeFranco, PeanutsHucko, Buddy Morrow and Jimmy Henderson); the Harry James Orchestra; theJimmy Dorsey Orchestra (Leader Lee Castle); and a Tom Jones South Africatour. Since arriving in Las Vegas in the mid '70's he has performed with thehouse bands at the many hotels on and off the strip, including the SilverSlipper, Desert Inn, "Lido de Paris" at the Stardust and the musical"Chicago" at Mandalay Bay.
The Swinging Roadrunners consist of Ryan Stovall (alto sax) andAddison Weaver (drum set), each of whom was selected by audition for theTexas Community College All-State Jazz Ensemble; Reed Porterfield (tenorsax); Autumn Rutherford (piano); Josh Murray (guitar); and Shaun Dubose(bass).
The ACC Big Band will perform selected charts from the WaltBoenig big band library.
The ACC Big Band fills its chairs with both local and student musicians. A15-piece orchestra, the band is comprised of retired professional musicians,band directors, professionals from other fields and former students playingswing era tunes from the golden years of American music.
Greer, a music instructor for AC’s Fine Arts Division, assembles his uniqueblend of college musicians as each semester progresses, measuring theirtalents to see just where they fit into the Swinging Roadrunner Combo. Hethen showcases those talents in fall and spring concerts.
Tickets for the show are $4 for adults, and $3 for senior citizens, studentsand children.
