Klein Defeats Lufkin
27-21, in playoff opener
By: Michael Sudhalter Posted Mon, Nov. 16, 2009, 2:00 pm CST The Klein High football team isn’t known for its passing game, but the Bearkats picked their spots and came up with one of their biggest victories this decade.
Klein High senior quarterback Michael West completed 6 of 9 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns, and senior running back Dekota Barnes had 27 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown as the Bearkats upset Lufkin, 27-21, Saturday afternoon at Klein Memorial Stadium.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak against the Panthers (8-3), and it was Klein football coach Stan Labay’s first victory over Lufkin; the Bearkats lost to Lufkin, 28-22, in last season’s playoff opener.
West completed a 13-yard pass to senior tight end Kevin Kisseberth, who also starts at defensive end.
Lufkin tied the game on a 21-yard pass from quarterback Deaundre Smiley to senior wide receiver Arthur Tinz.
But the Bearkats played tough defense, controlled the ball and managed to score 17 unanswered points for a 24-7 advantage.
Barnes ran for an eight-yard touchdown, senior defensive back Jonathan Family (who leads the team in interceptions) caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from West, and senior kicker Ron Doherty booted field goals from 33 and 37 yards, respectively.
Lufkin made a furious fourth quarter comeback, but Klein managed to keep the changes moving with senior fullback Alex Muddiman (eight yards for 28 yards) carrying the ball in key situations, and Barnes rushing for the first down that sealed the victory over the final two minutes of the game. Lufkin Rolls Past War Eagles 51-7
By: David Arno Posted Mon, Nov. 9, 2009, 11:00 am CST SHENANDOAH – Entering Friday night’s game against the playoff-bound Oak Ridge War Eagles, the Lufkin Panthers were in danger of losing consecutive games for the first time since they entered district 14-5A.
Playoff positioning was also on the line Friday night. The winner would be the Division II No. 1 seed from the district.
A late run in the second quarter by the Panthers put up 17 points in less than four minutes and sealed the 51-7 victory for Lufkin at Woodforest Bank Stadium.
After both teams struggling to get anything going to open the game, the Panthers finally ended the scoreless drought when running back Jamarcus Walker took the ball 13 yards to paydirt with 3:51 left in the first quarter.
The Panthers’ defense shut down the War Eagles in the first half, holding Oak Ridge without a completed pass and only 12 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
Not able to get anything going for most of the second quarter, the Panthers exploded within the last four minutes to put up 17 points and put the War Eagles in a big hole for the second half.
The scoring started on a drive where the Panthers had a fourth down conversion in War Eagle territory just outside of field goal range. Lufkin’s offense was then halted on the 18-yard line but resulted in a 35-yard Will Fenley field goal at 3:52.
The Panthers tacked on a touchdown when quarterback Deauntre Smiley took the ball five yards to put them up 16-0 after a failed two-point conversion.
Hoping to run out the clock, the War Eagles were content to running the ball but a bad snap led to a fumble by Ryan Cyr that the Panthers recovered on the War Eagle five. On the ensuing possession, Walker scored his second touchdown of the night on a five-yard run with only 47 seconds left in the half.
After trading possessions to open the second half and a muffed punt that Oak Ridge recovered on the 50-yard line, the War Eagles finally got on the board when Oakley took the ball 33 yards on a Statue of Liberty play that put them down 24-7.
The Panthers stole back any momentum that the War Eagles had though, when Walker took the kickoff 95 yards for his third touchdown on the night. Lufkin then forced a fumble on the next possession, that they recovered on the War Eagles 29. The very next pass from Smiley found Quinn Trimble, who fell into the end zone for another Panther touchdown.
Smiley would add his second rushing touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter when he took a QB draw 58 yards for a 44-7 lead.
With the game firmly in hand, Smiley was pulled for backup Arthur Tinz, who connected with Donte Finley on his first pass and went 82 yards for another score with 4:50 left in the fourth quarter and what would be the final margin of victory.

Final Score 28-14 Posted on Sat, September 19, 2009, 2:00 pm CST
The crowd was alive last night at Abe Martin Stadium as the Lufkin Panthers took on the No. 1 Longview Lobos.
The Panthers' defensive line had a great night, recovering a fumble with three seconds left in the first half that resulted in a 53 yard touchdown pass to end the half at 28-7 for the Panthers.
There was a little concern before the start of the game because the Longview Lobos started the season as the Number one team in the 4A. Once the game got started, though, nothing could stop the Panthers run to win.
Next week, Lufkin will play host to Mesquite.

The Lufkin Panther's stormed their way to victory over the Nacogodches Dragons this Friday in a sold out game at Nacogdoches High School.
During the first quarter, the Panthers scored two touchdowns. With seven minutes left in the first quarter Tra Horace received a pass from quarterback Deauntre Smiley, but they failed a 2 point conversion attempt. At 2:50 left in the quarter, Smiley ran the ball in for another touchdown, and Jamarcus Walker successfully completed a 2 point conversion, leaving the score 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
One minute and fifteen seconds into the second quarter, Quinn Trimble completed a pass from Smiley to score yet another touchdown for the Panthers. A field goal attempt was blocked by the Dragons. Horace received another pass from Smiley with 6:31 remaining in the half for a fourth Panther's touchdown. The two point conversion attempt failed.
Finally, with one minute and six seconds left in the half, Horace completed a pass from Arthur Tinz for a touchdown, and Will Fenley completed a kick to put the score at 33-0 for the Panthers. Both teams held each other at this score for the remainder of the game.
Next week, the Panthers face off against the number one team in the 4A, the Longview Lobos at Panthers Stadium.

The Courier's Stephen Whitfield Posted on Mon, October 12, 2009, 2:00 pm CST NEW CANEY – Lufkin’s running onslaught proved no match for New Caney Friday night, as the Panthers powered their way to an easy 47-6 victory over the Eagles on a blustery night at Don Ford Stadium.
The Panthers, heavy favorites coming into the game, tried to jump start their offense early with the passing game but quickly switched to the ground attack after a couple of quick scores.
Lufkin got on the board on its opening possession with a 47-yard run from Jamarcus Walker with 8:15 left in the first. Five minutes later, Walker scored again on a 29-yard run. Quarterback Deauntre Smiley’s 88-yard touchdown run gave Lufkin a 20-6 cushion, and the Panthers would not look back from there.
The Eagles, fresh off of an overtime win at Baytown Sterling last week, looked solid in the first half of their District 19-5A opener. A long run by Tyler Estes set up a 4-yard touchdown pass from Christian Perez to Chad Jackson on New Caney’s second possession. In the second quarter, the Eagles failed to score but had a lengthy drive that lasted nearly half the quarter.
With Lufkin scoring quickly, New Caney tried to run a ball-control offense. The Eagles only threw twice, often running direct snaps to Jackson or fellow halfback Donel Towers. It did not seem to matter, though. After a failed onside kick to start the second half, the Panthers needed just four plays to take a 27-6 lead, scoring on a 22-yard touchdown run from Smiley.
The floodgates came open in the fourth quarter as Lufkin scored three touchdowns playing its second string.
Most of Lufkin’s offense came from Smiley and Walker. The two combined for 308 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 18 carries, and nearly all of those numbers came in the first three quarters.
Panthers vs John Tyler Lions Posted on Sun, Sep 6, 2009, 8:00 PM CST
The Panthers faced off with the John Tyler Lions this past Friday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium, taking a loss in their second game of the year. Lions quarterback Jeremy Johnson had a big showing with 152 rushing yards, 154 throwing yards, and a touchdown, ending the game in the fourth quarter with a score of 27 - 18.
The Panthers were able to keep the Lions at bay during the first half, keeping the score within 7 points. During the second half, the Lions roared their way through the Panthers defense to score three touchdowns in three consecutive possessions.
It seems the Panthers had some difficulty running the ball during the second half, and failed to garner 2 two-point conversions, which added to their troubles in the second half.
Next week, the Panthers will face off against 2-0 Nacogdoches Dragons at Nacogdoches High School.
